Community Led Housing Project
Community-led housing (CLH) is a growing movement that can help local people to solve some their own housing need. It allows communities to set up their own housing projects and have a say over what they build and where. When the housing project is finished our Nepalese community would continue to manage the housing for our community to access. There is an opportunity for our local Nepalese community to lead a project to build some housing for the community. The scheme is available to all kinds of local communities in England, and it is supported by the Government.
Government guidelines to say that the properties built through these projects:
- Must be affordable for low income households
- Can be aimed at specific groups of people; for example for older people living in private rented homes struggling to pay rent in retirement, or for families to have their own home.
- Can be new built homes or an existing building that has been refurbished.
- Are led by the community, for the community.
Community Led Housing can offer something for everyone and often helps to deal with issues of isolation, unemployment and inactivity. Because the community is involved with the design of the housing it often leads to imaginative design, with energy efficient and environmentally friendly features. It can also help with integration with the wider community.
This type of project needs long-term commitment from our community and for several people in the community to be part of a steering group to lead the project over several years. There are many inspirational community-led housing projects around the country that have been completed.
Our local Council has received a grant from the government to provide start-up funding to local community led housing projects. The housing built will not be Council housing and will not be managed or owned by the Council.
To help us understand if this is something our community needs and what the housing needs are of our local Nepalese community we would appreciate if each local Nepalese family a can fill in a survey. If you have any query or have an idea please contact us at communityledhousing@fncuk.org for a discussion.
